There are several problems with that. The first is that Microsoft has
code into OS/2 and IBM needs M$ permition to open those sources.
Second you need to work on the code before you open it (documentation
and other stuff) and maybe the code for Warp 3 is lost in some machine
that nobody dares to touch.

What could be done is to open some parts of the system that do not
have M$ code in it and needs some upgrade (MMOS2, SOM 3.0, KEE, GRADD,
etc), unfortunally there is some code of other companies into PM
(PMMERGE, aa fonts and non rect. windows). But then probably this
won't happen either

They could also open the source of OS/2 PPC, that would be really
interesting, but those are only dreams.

I really wonder where those rumours come from all the time. Do you
really think IBM didn't resolve those issues? I was in contact with Mike
Kogan back in 2001, he was the chief developer of OS/2 2.0, which
means the time when IBM and Microsoft broke up. He told me if IBM does
not release it as open source they don't want to, it's not a question of
rights at all. I talk about the core parts here, might be that some
stuff like MMPM contains 3rd party rights but what we need belongs to IBM.

It wouldn't really make sense to release Warp 3 code. Rather PPC or
(WSeB). And yes, source beeing lost could really be a problem I fear...

Also you are right about cleaning up sourcecode, this would have to be
done.

for me this is more realistic because this code is just partialy used on
current OS/2 releases. And I fear that as long as OS/2 is still used in
big banks IBM will not even think about releasing the current sourcecode
(paranoia).

What about asking IBM to release all the documentation on the OS/2 PPC
project. I know it would be better to release the code but I have no
idea if that even exists anymore, but I'm pretty sure of the existence
of all the documentation.
Any comments?

I, for one, will vote for that idea. I do have an electronic copy
of OS/2 for the PPC. I think it's a basis for a good starting
point.

Well, I think the book is a good point to start from too, but what I
meant was all the documents related to the project. There is an
internal network file system where you can see the links to all those
documents. They are there and I bet nobody cares about them anymore,
why not release them.

From time to time I get this crazy idea of involving myself on this
mega project of building a replacement for OS/2 and save its API (for
witch thousands of applications are written). But I have never work at
a kernel level before. I guess you just have to jump in and take the
blue pil. Right now I'm downloading Pistachio a C++ ukernel and I'll
be installing Suse 9.1 on an old computer to do some compiling, see
how I do. If I can make it work I would love to do a very basic server
and then try to create basic mappings for some OS/2 device drivers
calls, maybe to get a keyboard driver working.

I have a copy of OS/2 PPC, just not the machine to run it on, so all I
can do is to look at those ELF files and wonder how much work went
into that. Pity, if they could only open that source.
