There has not been much activity at http://www.osfree.org
since the end of last year (according to the news of the

The OSFree site does not have any news dated for this
year. They do have a question about what kernel to
base the OSFree os on.

I had dropped membership from this group due to
inactivity but rejoined to see if there was any
new interest.

PS Perhaps 'getting the word out' about this project
would increase activity and increase the number of
those who could work on it? Even the FreePM seems
inactive ( http://frepm.sourceforge.net ).

I only track "progress" by the messages which occur here. I
don't think I've ever visited the website. The most recent
interchange dealt with obtaining a more complete set of
information on OS/2 for the PPC. Other than that I recently
purchased OpenOffice which allow me to exchange data and
documents with M$-trapped users.

As I have little concern about developing a replacement
kernel for OS/2, which I consider doable, I have greater
concern about its future maintenance, which software history
shows as less doable. Thus I continue to work on a software
project to significantly reduce maintenance effort, i.e. increase
developer productivity.

If anyone wants to pursue the design and documentation of
such a replacement, posting it as a "work in progress" on the
website, I would be happy to participate. If you simply want
to code while designing and thus rewriting code while
designing, then I prefer you waste your time (and code) and
not mine.

The absence of events here does not reflect those occurring
elsewhere, particularly from Innotek which seems to have
made ODIN practical. We certainly have enough unused
licensed copies of OS/2 as well as the availability of eCS to
supply any sudden burst in the using community...well beyond
any 2006 feared deadline. Having OpenOffice and Acrobat
Reader 4 closed some application gaps. I would not be
surprised to see other applications like Peachtree Accounting,
Quicken, and Avery LabelPro also executing under the Innotek
runtime software.

That means you ought to overcome your nervousness and
fears, stop worrying about whose coding and number of code
lines, and take the time to design an OS which does not only
what OS/2 supports but also what it should support...like a
64-bit implementation.

There's little sense in trying to achieve "now" for future
delivery. You already have "now". You need to produce a
"future" version in time for it to be a "now" instead of a "has
been". You focus on designing a replacement on where it
should be, not on where it is. You do it in a way that is
hardware platform independent...for both OS and applications.

You have OS/2. What you need is something better,
something without its "now" limits.

In my honest opinion, eComStation is better. It is based on
an updated OS/2 kernel by IBM with lots of really nice
features.

It would be nice if there was an OS/2 clone. Perhaps
one that could be sold by those who make eComStation
and sell the service/help for it like they do with
the different variations of Linux.

very few posts. Have so many dropped out but not un-

But I'm really interested in any progress (don't believe that there is,

269. Actually the number seems a little low considering the
interest that ought to exist in a supported OS/2 replacement. I
think eCS does amount to an enhancement, but not much. It
has the same problem that Serenity Systems cannot solve
with its resources: what do you do when IBM pulls this plug as
well.

I don't know what constititutes progress. To me that would
lie in having the design for the replacement as a work in
progress. I've continued to offer to participate in that effort,
but no positive responses so far. Sometimes it just takes a
little longer to jar others into action.
