Debian's kernel will probably suit it best. The kernel has tons of packages pre-built and it is forked
from Ubuntu. A lot of applications would be compatible with it, and the distribution and its forks
are quite popular.

Well, Ubuntu forked from Debian. Not Debian from Ubuntu.
